Key Skills and OfSTED (March 2002)

Summary of points from recent OfSTED inspections in South Yorkshire:

Although key skills pre-16 is not yet part of the inspection framework some schools recently inspected are finding that there is some interest.

A key skills checklist for SMT prior to inspection is now available.

Inspectors have shown interest in key skills for a variety of reasons:
- A school focus on key skills is evident
- Interest in externally funded projects
- Links to current initiatives e.g. literacy and numeracy strategies

Although reports have not yet been released, in one case Key Skills has been highlighted as a major development area for the school. Inspectors are being briefed on developments as the OfSTED framework is under review, with changes, including the inclusion of Key Skills, coming in next year.

The overall impression has been that key skills are viewed positively as:
- A major focus for a school for future developments
- Contributing to he overall raising of standards at GCSE and GNVQ
- Helping to address the basic skills agenda
- helping to address issies of disaffection at KS4.
