Why do key skills?

Key skills can significantly improve a student’s:
- Motivation
- Progression
- Achievement
- Employability
Employers recognise the value of key skills in recruitment and for promotion. Higher education has recognised their worth, including key skills in the UCAS profile and the UCAS tariff system (Level 2=10 points, Level 3 = 20 points, Level 4= 30 points)

Key Skills are included in the DfES Section 96 list (previously section 400) of accredited qualifications for students in secondary education.

Key Skills are integral to all Modern Apprenticeships. From September 2000 all training providers have been encouraged to offer the key skills qualification.

Key Skills are increasingly essential in work because employers want people who are:
- Computer literate
- Able to relate well to customers
- Good team workers
- Flexible in their job functions
- Able to organise their job activities
- Decision makers and problem solvers
- Able to communicate effectively (Information from LSDA)
